We are looking to take on a Deckhand in our Southampton port to take on a multi-skilled marine role primary crewing the Port’s launches as Pilot Launch Deckhand or Southampton Patrol Deckhand.  Assist the Coxswain in meeting the requirements of the Port’s launch service and the statutory duties of the Harbour Authority.

 

Accountabilities

  • Assist the Coxswain in the launch operations whilst at sea. This will include maintaining a good lookout, reporting any potential concerns, as well as carrying out other navigational duties as directed by the Coxswain.
  • Assist the Coxswain in conveying authorised persons and Pilots, as required by VTS.
  • Ensure the launch is in a safe and seaworthy condition to undertake duties. Check for damage/defects and report to the Coxswain as well as logging defects.
  • Ensure pilot ladders appear in good condition and are clear of any fault prior to allowing Pilots to embark/disembark.
  • Ensure all working equipment and lifesaving appliances are maintained in a good condition.
  • Ensure the launch is maintained in a clean condition and any minor maintenance is carried out.
  • Check bilges at regular intervals and pump dry as required. Check integrity of watertight compartments.
  • Daily, Weekly, Monthly boats checks are completed as required.
  • Fill fuel, Ad blue and water tanks as required.
  • Maintain 22 Berth/Endeavour Quay in a clean and tidy state.
  • Any other duties that may be deemed to be within your capabilities and commensurate with your role.

Skills, experiences, qualifications, and competencies

Essential

  • Minimum RYA PB2 or EDH
  • First Aid
  • VHF
  • PST (Sea Survival)
  • Due to the demands of the role candidates will need to hold a valid ENG1, or be physically fit enough to be able to obtain this.
  • Working knowledge of Central and Eastern Solent and Southampton Water.
  • Comfortable working in extreme weather conditions
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and previous experience of dealing with public.
  • Driving licence
  • Ability to be a team player.
  • Willingness to progress within the Marine department.

Your shift pattern will be 2 days 2 nights 4 off of 7 rotations then 18 days off
