Do you want to work with some of the UK’s most inspirational voices in non-fiction? Are you a confident and calm communicator who has experience of securing impactful PR for high profile talent?   

 

Penguin General is looking for a creative, experienced and proactive senior PR professional with a passion for self-help, memoir, science, personal development and psychology to join our award-winning Communications team as Head of Campaigns to cover a period of parental leave. Ideally, the successful candidate will start in late March, or as soon as possible after. Our authors include Dr Rangan Chatterjee, Meik Wiking, Julia Samuel, James Nestor, Professor Russell Foster, Vaclav Smil, Ben Macintyre, Diane Abbott, Cal Newport, Ellie Middleton and Simon Sinek. 

 

The Opportunity  

  

You will be lead and execute key publicity campaign campaigns for non-fiction books, alongside managing the Penguin Life and Business specialists within the communications team.  Your colleagues will look to you for your expertise within non-fiction publishing.  You will build strong working relationships with authors and agents to provide the highest level of author care. You will get to work with some of the most creative publishing colleagues in the business, alongside a team of experts in a friendly and inclusive environment that values individuality, champions creativity, and celebrates individual and team successes.  

 

You can expect to: 

 

  • Create and implement ambitious, strategic PR campaigns for select author brands and titles across Penguin Life, Business and Viking imprints 

  • Line manage the Penguin Life and Business specialists in the comms team, creating development plans, managing performance and feeding into campaign plans -- ensuring clear prioritisation and expectation management   

  • Maintain and develop excellent relationships with high-profile and influential stakeholders, such as authors, agents, journalists and global publishing partners  

  • Communicate and collaborative effectively with internal departments, including sales and marketing, editorial, rights and international colleagues 

  • Coordinate the Penguin Life, Business and key Non Fiction team meetings; regular comms / sales meetings/ brainstorms / ideas meetings and away days  

  • Be first point of call for Publishing Director for Life and Business on submissions. You will play a key role in the acquisition of new books, providing communications feedback and contributing to and attending pitches to acquire new talent  

  • Work closely with the Editorial Team on the pitch, copy and messaging for upcoming books as well as leading the publishing strategies and approach for brand authors and catalogue titles   

 

What You’ll Bring  

 

You’ll have a proven track record of independently producing standout PR campaigns.  You will have significant line management experience.  You will have strong market knowledge of the non fiction and wellbeing market, and have strong relationships with key media contacts.  

  

You’ll also: 

  

  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be confident pitching and presenting internally and externally 

  • Proven management skills and be a team player. A passionate and engaging individual who is able to motivate others  

  • A good listener, who can take multiple viewpoints into consideration  

  • Be a strategic thinker, adaptable, curious and inspiring, bringing new ways of thinking and ideas to the team  

  • Be confident and have a positive and resilient disposition  

  • Be highly organised with excellent time management to juggle concurrent projects with different lead times 

  • Think in innovative and creative ways to create buzz for our books 

  • Be well networked with media contacts and be knowledgeable and curious about all forms of media

Salary: £45,000 – 55,000 dependent on how your skills and experience align to the role, plus benefits.

Hybrid working: We’re experimenting with a hybrid way of working that suits the needs of each team. While our offices across the UK are places to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility around where you work is just as important. For this role we expect that you will work from our London office on Vauxhall Bridge Road, attending key meetings and working as part of the team usually three days per week, with home working on the other days. We are open to discussing the exact balance of office to remote working through the recruitment process.
