Batch & Furnace First Line Manager

Barnsley Plant

Role description

The purpose of this role is to provide glass of correct quality, volume and cost to meet production requirement through the effective supervision of batch and furnace operation through managing, motivating and developing batch and furnace staff to maximise performance.  Reporting to the Batch & Furnace Manager on batch plant performance, energy utilisation and emissions.

Responsibilities:
  • Order raw materials and control stock levels to ensure availability of the right materials for production, including oil stocks for gas interruption.
  • Supervise the flow of raw materials through the batch plant/furnace to ensure the correct quality and volume of glass.
  • Work with Production/Engineering to diagnose and solve problems originating in the batch plant or furnace and to reduce T1/T4 times and generate daily batch plant/furnace performance information.
  • Ensure that furnace emissions are controlled and provide regular reports on emission levels to LA.
  • Work with Plant Engineering, Tech Centre and outside contractors to organise repairs and refurbishments of the batch plant and furnace with minimal downtime to meet operational requirements and to maximise furnace life.  
  • Take responsibility for the implementation of health, safety and hygiene regulations, procedures and working practices.
Required skills / qualifications:
  • Experience of leading a team and managing batch and furnace operation in the glass industry and in-depth understanding of the batch and furnace operation
  • Engineering experience including understanding of refractory engineering and Chemistry qualification or equivalent knowledge.
  • Understanding of the production impact of batch and furnace decisions
  • Understanding of instrumentation
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety Regulations

  • Competitive salary based on Grade 10 of the harmonised pay scales; Salary min £46,000 - £52,893 max.
