The Emergency Services Network (ESN) is a huge critical priority for BT and our commitment to do the best for our customer and our country. ESN will be the most advanced Emergency Services Network in the world – once again, BT/EE will be helping Britain to be a world leader in mobile.

This team defines our customer-facing mobile data services, how those services should work, and how they should be configured. To achieve this, the team designs for platforms with names known to the industry as SGW, PGW, DNS, Gi LAN and CGNAT Firewall (explained below), plus others.  It aligns with strategy to ensure that we build, upgrade and bring in new solutions to stay ahead of the competition. This is a really exciting time as we are moving off traditional platforms that have served us for the past decade, onto a new cloud native core with container orchestration and advanced 5G features.

The successful candidate must be willing to undergo BPSS Level Government Screening which requires residence in the UK for a minimum of 3 years.

What you’ll be doing

•    Author design documents (such as High Level or Low Level Designs, configuration, or sequence flows)
•    Liaise and manage vendors and suppliers.  Provide ad-hoc consultancy to other teams and business units based on your specialist knowledge of our services
•    Analyse logs and packet traces to identify the cause of issues.  Attend and feedback on a series of standard meetings & forums including Project Meetings, Design Review Meetings, and Post Implementation Reviews
•    Design, configure and deploy changes of EPC Network in Virtual and Containerised Environments
•    You could be working on a number of platforms such as SGW (Serving Gateway), PGW (Packet Data Network Gateway), DNS (Domain Name System), Gi Lan (Internet traffic optimisation platforms), or CGNAT (Carrier Grade Network Address Translation)

Essential skills

What we would like to see on your CV

•    Excellent experience of designing and/or operating a component within the 3GPP 4G packet core, such as MME, SGW, PGW, PCRF, Gi Lan, or ePDG
•    Proven ability to understand how a technical system works underneath, and put this to use in designing new services and platforms to perform optimally
•    Excellent written and verbal communications skills.  Able to produce documentation and communicate complex issues clearly and concisely, including to non-technical people
•    You will possess a future thinking approach, continually refreshing your high level knowledge of industry changes.  Over the next couple of years this will cover 3GPP releases 16 & 17, cloud computing (Openstack/Docker/Kubernetes/Microservices), web and internet technologies
•    Good coaching, influencing and relationship building skills.  Able to support the development of more junior members in the team and able to negotiate a collaborative approach with others
