WHAT TO EXPECT
JLR is fully committed to our electrification journey, and the Advanced Battery Materials Laboratory (ABML) is delivering high quality data to inform Engineering Decisions.
This role is currently based at Lyons Park, Coventry however, you will also need to be prepared to work at our Whitley site if required.
The Advanced Battery Materials Laboratory sits within Product Engineering Operations and provides a materials testing and analysis service to customers in design engineering, prototype build & test, and warranty. The components under analysis include battery frames, busbars and other components, as well as battery cells.
The Materials Engineering Technician (Teardown & sample prep) is responsible for carrying out physical teardowns of batteries and cells and making and measuring samples using basic dimensional and weighing equipment and preparing samples for analytical analysis.
You will use standard assessment protocols to report on measurements, ensuring excellent attention to detail, and contributing to process development to get the most out of the test and analysis. You will work with our team of Chemists, Materials Scientists and Metallurgists, being flexible to activity changes throughout the programme cycle plans.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
• Ensure that laboratory procedures and protocols are followed to maintain a safe working environment.
• Make and measure samples accurately and in a timely manner, recording data and observations as required.
• Record experimental data accurately and in a timely manner. Communicate results and observations to team members and assist in the preparation of reports and presentations.
• Carry out physical teardowns of cells and prepare material samples for analysis under the guidance of team Scientists and Engineers.
• Maintain laboratory equipment, and facility and support to ensure it is calibrated and in good working order. Support with Housekeeping activity.
• Support troubleshooting with equipment and propose solutions to ensure that experiments can be carried out effectively.
• Maintain laboratory records and ensure that all data is entered accurately and in compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines.
• Participate in regular laboratory meetings and contribute to discussions on experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation of results.
• Safety is at the foremost of our working practices, and you will work within company guidelines, as well as contribute to development of Risk Assessments etc.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Science or Engineering.
• Experience with test and measurement of mechanical engineering systems or components.
• Experience using mechanical and semi-automated tools and instruments.
• Proficiency in using tools and instruments for dimensional measurement.
• Strong attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols.
• Ability to record data accurately and communicate findings effectively.
Good analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience of recording, analysing and interpreting data accurately and able to form conclusions from results, against given criteria.
• Demonstrable ability to adhere and contribute to the development of safety systems and processes, identifying and acting on workplace hazards and using safety control measures and PPE. Risk Assessments, COSHH and SDS
• Working proficiency in using standards and methods to deliver and assess test results.
• Good communication skills, with experience of recording and presenting results and observations in a clear and concise manner.
• Good computer skills, Use of Excel and PowerPoint.
