Salary: £68,000 up to £75,000 - depending on experience and skills

Contract Type: Permanent – Full Time

Security Level: BPSS

We are the UK's aviation and aerospace regulator and recognised as a world leader in its field. Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.

The Role

We are looking for a Portfolio Manager with formidable credit analysis skills and strong communication and problem-solving capabilities to join our busy Aviation & Travel Finance and Licensing department (“ATFL”).

We financially supervise and regulate the UK’s leading airlines and tour operators. In doing so we also manage the Air Travel Trust (“ATT”) fund, which was set up to repatriate and refund ATOL protected customers in case of failure of an ATOL protected tour operator.

In recent years the UK travel and aviation markets have been experiencing significant challenges as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and geopolitical events and you will be at the front of helping shape the regulatory approach as operators seek to deal with the impact of these events.

You will conduct in depth analysis of the financial viability of your portfolio of companies (up to 15), looking at both the qualitative and quantitative drivers of their performance.

In addition to the above you will also be responsible for:

  • Creating relationships with CEO's, CFO's and other senior management of licence holders within your portfolio
  • Conducting a thorough financial assessment, and on-going monitoring of a portfolio of regulated airlines and travel companies
  • Providing CAA Senior Management verbal and written presentations of analysis that identifies the key issues and making recommendations for licensing decisions and future actions
  • Identifying early licensing actions on deteriorating credits
  • Supporting the management team, including undertaking projects as requested
  • Taking a leading role in handling complex cases (e.g. companies in financial distress, leveraged buyouts)
  • Identifying where practices and policy do not achieve their aim and make suggestions on how they can be improved
  • Monitoring trends in the market
  • Making a major contribution to managing specific projects
  • The role may also involve line managing and coaching more junior colleagues

About You

You will need to be dedicated and think creatively to improve analytical methods and monitoring tools to address issues raised by a dynamic and developing industry. Strong communication and influencing skills and the ability to carry conviction with external partners at a high level will ensure success in this role.

This role would suit a ‘self-starter’ with a growth attitude and desire to learn, who also displays a strong resilience and ability to defend their view when challenged.

Other skills will include:

  • Strong experience in credit risk management and/or a financial qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CFA or equivalent) or other relevant experience;
  • Knowledge and experience in accounting and economics; corporate finance; debt and equity financing; corporate restructuring; or strategic analysis would be an advantage
  • Solid experience in understanding of lending facilities and loan documentation.
  • Good IT skills, including ability to develop financial and data models to apply simple analytical tools
  • An understanding of policy and regulatory issues affecting UK airlines and travel industries is helpful but not essential
