Power Systems Engineer - Electrical Protection & Control - United Kingdom at National Grid

Job Descrption

About the Role

As a Power Systems Engineer – Electrical Protection & Control, you will be required to live within a 45-minute commute of Leeds, Warwickshire, Bristol or Surrey as you will be based at one of our main locations within these areas in this national role covering projects across England and Wales, you’ll be office based for 2 days per week with the remaining 3 days either working from home or onsite based on project work. The Power Systems Engineer – Electrical Protection & Control will assure the project design, delivery and recovery process for scheme types within competency range including faults, investigations and cyber assurance activities whilst assisting more senior engineers and developing technical knowledge. You’ll ensure that the business has optimal scope definition and solutions for each Protection & Control individual project/incident investigation whilst guaranteeing the application of the highest standards of Safety, Quality, Sustainability, Environmental and Resilience are considered in the process of maintaining high power system reliability.

 

Key Responsibilities:


•    Provide detailed engineering support ensuring cost effective and appropriate option selection
•    Coordinate and resolve of technical issues from internal and external stakeholders
•    Support the development of standardised solutions for asset interventions
•    Drive consistency and ‘value engineering’ working in partnership with wider teams as appropriate
•    Provide risk-based design assurance via stage-by-stage confirmation ensuring commercial service
•    Provide design, obsolescence and commissioning advice/assurance as appropriate
•    Work towards authorisation to discharge the role of Commissioning Officer/Relay Settings Engineer
•    Provide ET technical 1st and 2nd line support to the wider business
•    Provide technical guidance on cyber, data comms and automation assurance activities
•    Work in partnership with the ET type registration & innovation processes
•    Liaise with global procurement specialists on tender and support contract activities 
•    Support technical investigations within scope progressing to completion/investigations 
•    Undertake audit and incident analysis supporting engineering and commissioning reviews
•    Recommend performance improvements and provide transmission engineering status assurance 
•    Work with development and delivery teams ensuring efficient and effective delivery
•    Ensure the execution of National Grid governance requirements

About You

Essential:


•    A full driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK
•    Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Systems or Power Electronics level 5 qualification or an equivalent recognised apprenticeship
•    Significant post qualification electrical power systems engineering experience or electrical engineering experience combined with power systems qualifications 
•    Experience of design, extension and lifetime management of assets
•    Project delivery experience

 

Desirable:


•    A relevant BSc Degree in a STEM discipline
•    Membership of a relevant professional body
•    Power systems engineering experience gained from the electrical supply industry
•    Experience of security, cyber and procedural requirements associated with ISS schemes
•    Experience of commissioning electrical substation equipment
•    Contract management experience
•    Experience of ISO9001 and the application of Quality Management Systems
