Power system Engineer - ESO at National Grid
Wokingham, United Kingdom

Job Descrption

About the role

Great Britain's electricity system is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come.

As a Network modelling engineer within ESO business you will:
•    Lead the development of models for the electricity transmission system, ensuring the integrity of the system is maintained for all infrastructure and connection developments, while also ensuring compliance with our license.
•    Develop and maintain network models for operational and planning teams, ensuring data accuracy and ownership.
•    Develop and maintain IT infrastructure for power system analysis.
•    Develop new IT solutions that support our digital-first strategy, driving value and efficiency in our current and future processes.
•    Innovate solutions to deliver maximum consumer benefit.

About us

As Great Britain’s electricity system operator (ESO), we sit at the heart of the electricity system, using our outstanding engineering and commercial expertise to balance electricity supply and demand. Ultimately, we keep the electricity flowing directly to where it’s needed, second by second.

Becoming the National Energy System Operator

In Summer of 2024, the ESO will transition to becoming the National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator will be the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

The ESO, including all of its existing roles, will be at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation will be set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As the ESO are today, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

About you

Due to the growing uncertainty of the energy landscape, there is a requirement to adapt how we model and study the transmission network. We are looking for individuals who not only have a demonstrable understanding of the fundamentals of power system operation and how to use industry standard software packages for assessments (such as DigSILENT PowerFactory/PSCAD) but also have skills and experience in using programming languages and operational research techniques that will allow a step change in the type and level of analysis we complete.

Essential:

•    General power system knowledge especially transmission networks operation and offshore network development
•    Experience of power system modelling and analysis including HVDC technology
•    Ability to represent Electricity System Operator at external meetings and conferences
•    Knowledge of key industry frameworks, codes and technical challenges
•    Good level of competence in producing written reports and presentations to internal or external audiences.
•    Good knowledge of programming in Python and VBA
•    Good understanding of IT product management and cloud service
•    Familiarity with optimisation techniques

What you'll get

A competitive salary between £43000-£71000 – dependent on experience and capability.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.

You will also have access to a comprehensive benefits package tailored to support your well-being and professional success. From a competitive salary to flexible work arrangements, we promote your work-life balance. Enjoy fit for purpose wellbeing and lifestyle offerings, ongoing skill development aligned to our Purpose and Values, and be part of a supportive community that values your individuality and where you can belong.

Key Accountabilities

•    Design and maintain models for the onshore and offshore electricity transmission system in our power system analysis tools, ensuring the integrity of the system is maintained for all infrastructure and new models. Also, proactively incorporate new technologies and solutions related to Holistic Network Design (HND) and Centralized Strategic Network Plan (CSNP).
•    Develop and maintain network data, modelling, and analytical tools to enable robust and adequate network analysis for both short-term and long-term planning.
Collaborate with industry parties to keep our models up to date, provide inputs for code and policy change initiatives, and offer engineering compliance guidance.
