JOB PURPOSE:
 

The Engineering/Maintenance Manager plays a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation and continuous improvement of our metal packaging plant.

 

This position demands a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills and technical expertise to oversee engineering functions, maintenance activities, and facility management.

 

The ideal candidate will drive team development, implement preventative maintenance strategies, optimize uptime, manage budgets effectively, and maintain the integrity of our facilities. The Engineering/Maintenance Manager serves as a key leader in driving operational excellence and continuous improvement, by developing a culture of innovation, accountability, and teamwork.

 

This role contributes significantly to our overall success and sustainability in the industry.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/REQUIREMENTS:

     

    • Recruit, train, and mentor engineering staff to ensure a high level of competency and productivity.
    • Foster a culture of continuous learning and development to enhance team skills and capabilities.
    • Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback for individual and team growth.
    • Develop a strong performance management culture
    • Develop and implement comprehensive preventative maintenance programs to maximize equipment reliability and longevity.
    • Establish maintenance schedules, protocols, and procedures to minimize unplanned downtime and production disruptions.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to prioritize maintenance activities and address critical issues promptly in order to reduce Downtime
    • Analyze downtime data and root cause analysis to identify opportunities for improvement.
       
    • Lead troubleshooting efforts during equipment failures and coordinate timely resolution to minimize production losses.
    • Develop annual maintenance and capital expenditure budgets in alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
    • Monitor expenses, track variances, and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising quality or safety standards.
    • Assist Finance – Depreciable life of new assets, identification, and location of assets. Amendments to asset register for missing, sold & scrap asset removal.
       
    • Work closely with procurement teams to source equipment, spare parts, and services cost-effectively.
    • Oversee the maintenance and operation of all facility systems, including utilities, HVAC, and infrastructure.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, safety protocols, and environmental regulations.
    • Collaborate with external vendors and contractors to execute facility upgrades, renovations, and repairs as needed.
    • Run capital projects from inception to production hand over. Determine resources to complete tasks either internal or external. Design requirements of project from buildings to environmental requirements, determine service capacities which in turn determines siting of project.
    • Design & Drawings – Press tool modification & design, reverse engineered solutions to all manufacturing machinery. Redesign of machine parts for local manufacture. – Lay out drawings & maintenance of standard component /production drawings.
    • Liaise with Group departments on machine purchase / spares, technical specifications & drawings. Group projects.

    • Supporting with all aspects of employee relationships including (but not limited to) Absence, Disciplinary, Capability, Performance and Grievance Management.

     

    • All other tasks commensurate with the grade and skills, as may be requested by the Plant Manager or Business Unit Manager.

     

    CRITICAL COMPETENCIES:

     

    Skills

     

    • Proven experience in a managerial or supervisory role within a manufacturing environment, preferably in metal packaging or related industries, with ability to motivate a team to achieve business objectives.

     

    • Strong background in engineering with a focus on mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering.

     

    • In-depth knowledge of preventative maintenance principles

     

    • Proficiency in analysing equipment performance data, conducting failure analysis, and implementing corrective actions to improve reliability and uptime.

     

    • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic maintenance plans aligned with business objectives and production schedules.

     

    • Experience in budget management, financial analysis, and cost control measures related to maintenance operations.

     

    • Familiarity with regulatory requirements, safety standards, and environmental regulations applicable to manufacturing facilities.

     

    • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, vendors, and stakeholders.

     

    • Proven track record of driving continuous improvement initiatives, implementing best practices, and optimizing operational processes.

     

    • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and make informed decisions under pressure.

     

    • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering high-quality results in a fast-paced environment.

     

     

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

     

    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or a related field from a recognized UK institution, however experience and time served will be taken into account.
       
    • Extensive experience working in engineering and maintenance roles within the UK manufacturing industry, particularly in metal packaging or similar sectors.
       
    • Comprehensive understanding of UK health and safety regulations, environmental standards, and industry-specific compliance requirements.
       
    • Familiarity with UK-specific codes, regulations, and best practices governing maintenance operations, facilities management, and engineering processes.
       
    • Strong network and familiarity with UK-based suppliers, contractors, and service providers for equipment, spare parts, and maintenance services.
       
    • Prior experience managing engineering and maintenance teams in accordance with UK employment laws, regulations, and industry standards.
       
    • Knowledge of budgeting processes, financial reporting requirements, and cost management principles relevant to maintenance and facilities operations.
       
    • Auto CAD and Solidworks capabilities is desirable
       
    • Understanding of UK-specific manufacturing trends, market dynamics, and technological advancements influencing the metal packaging industry and related sectors.
