We’re looking for an energetic CTO who’s not afraid to roll up their sleeves 

As CTO for the Kape Privacy Division, you’ll shape the technology vision, development, and product operations for four major VPN brands (ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access, CyberGhost, and ZenMate) and help drive us into the next phase of rapid growth to provide more value to over 6 million customers worldwide. You’ll own software development, quality assurance, and product operations, leading more than 250 people worldwide (including hubs in London, Romania, Poland, Germany, Singapore, and Hong Kong) and increasing that number significantly. You’ll take over a team of strong senior leaders and engineers, and it will be your job to empower them, make them more effective, and equip them with the skills and authority to make the best decisions for our brands. We believe in simple solutions for complex problems, and we strive to achieve that not only in our architectures, but also in our processes and organizational structures. 

 

What you’ll do

As the CTO, you’re responsible for the careers of all of your engineers. It’s your job to foster a highly functioning, agile, and lean organization where people want to work. We have an amazing mission, and you’ll use your influence to move that mission forward every day. You’ll take over responsibility for all software development and product operations from the current CTO, who will be shifting his responsibilities once you have the reins. (We’ve determined that our CTO has too many top-level responsibilities, presenting a key-person risk—the same kind of risk you’ll be expected to identify and mitigate in your own organization.)

 

Specifically, you’ll be expected to

  • Lead the development and delivery of all products and services as the company expands its product portfolio
  • Guide and influence all processes for the engineering organization, including the software development lifecycle, type of technologies used, and overall prioritization of work and projects
  • Grow our team significantly by hiring highly talented software engineering, quality assurance, and operations professionals 
  • Nurture talent by providing skill and career development to team members and training them to become exceptional technical leads and people managers
  • Ensure measurement and mitigation of relevant security, privacy, and business continuity risks
  • Manage the budget for your entire organization

We’d love for you to have many or all of the following 

  • Experience in running organizations of at least 100 engineers that build native apps for two or more platforms as well as cloud-based systems. (Leadership at this scale is a must.)
  • A track record of leading organizations to deliver apps with high levels of automated test coverage, a robust level of security, and 24/7/365 operations.
  • Extremely sharp logic and communication skills.
  • Vision. You see how you’d like customers, teams, technology, and competitors to relate years into the future.
  • Leadership. You define goals and strategies, design organizations, hire, motivate, assess, and manage.
  • Learning. You quickly acquire and understand new skills and knowledge and apply them to your work.
  • Deep interest in and understanding of privacy and security issues affecting consumers online, and opinions and visions for how they might evolve over time.
  • Excellent project management skills. You run efficient projects and have metrics to prove it.
  • An embrace of the principles of extreme ownership, and superb stakeholder management.
  • Experience working in a matrix environment where your influence will deliver the most value.
  • A history of performing in globally distributed teams, helping to enable collaboration and bridge gaps.

 

Location

  • Very strongly preferred: full-time based in Singapore
  • Possibly acceptable: based in London or Bucharest, but spending several months per year in Singapore
  • Must be working face-to-face at our offices—no remote considered
  • Must be able to travel to Europe and Asia offices several times per year
