C-MAP Bombay/Mumbai Fellow | Department of Photography and International Program Department at MoMA

Job Descrption

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a C-MAP Fellow to support envisioning and development of research initiatives on visual art, architecture, design, and cinema in Bombay/Mumbai through the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, for The Museum of Modern Art’s Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP) initiative. Led by Lucy Gallun, Curator in the Department of Photography, and Rattanamol Singh Johal, Assistant Director of the International Program, the C-MAP Bombay/Mumbai Group is constituted of MoMA staff members from across curatorial and curatorial affairs departments. The C-MAP Bombay/Mumbai group will build on the research into South Asian modernism and contemporary art conducted through the C-MAP program between 2015 and 2019. We will focus on a single city, i.e. Bombay/Mumbai, exploring its rich cultural history in a transdisciplinary manner while also identifying and developing program possibilities at MoMA. Following the direction of the group leaders, and in consultation with the International Program Department, the Fellow will plan, execute, and document a program of monthly group meetings (in-person or virtual as needed) featuring scholars, artists and curators as well as group travel to the city/region of focus. The Fellow also collaborates actively with other C-MAP Fellows and International Program staff on organizing cross-group seminars as well as editing and maintaining the C-MAP website, post (post.moma.org). This is a two-year fellowship.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Coordinates with the C-MAP group leaders and the C-MAP Coordinator on the implementation of a research plan and on a program of visiting speakers to be presented either virtually or on-site at MoMA.
  • Identifies artists, curators, and scholars relevant to research focus.
  • Prepares for monthly C-MAP group meetings, including compiling relevant research materials, biographies, and meeting agendas in advance of the visits; corresponds with invited speakers; and maintains records of contacts and activities.
  • Plans and coordinates group travel, both domestic and international, involving detailed itineraries for visits to cultural institutions, artists’ studios, collections, etc., books flights, and coordinates transportation, hotels, dinners, and meetings, etc., attends and participates in group trips. 
  • Assists with the organization of and participates in joint seminars organized with the other C-MAP groups.
  • Works closely with C-MAP group leaders as well as the C-MAP Coordinator, other C-MAP Fellows, and a cross-departmental advisory board to commission texts and oversee content development for post, C-MAP’s online research platform (post.moma.org).
  • With C-MAP Coordinator and International Program Department Coordinator and Assistant Director, helps prepare reports on C-MAP group activities for funders.
  • Researches and keeps C-MAP group members informed about relevant exhibitions and events related to the group’s area of focus.
  • Supports other Museum research activities related to C-MAP group focus, as needed.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

 Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in art history, cultural studies, or equivalent.
  • Specialized knowledge of modern and contemporary cultural practice in Bombay/Mumbai.
  • Strong knowledge of 20th- and 21st-century art history within a global context and specific knowledge of transnational art history and contemporary practices in South Asia.
  • Deep familiarity with key artistic centers and networks in South Asia.
  • Written and spoken fluency in English and one or more languages spoken in the region (including, but not limited to, Hindi, Marathi, and Gujarati).
  • Demonstrated research, writing, and editing capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to successfully work as part of a team.
  • Prior experience working within an art institution strongly preferred.
  • Some administrative experience and knowledge of basic organizational procedures preferred.

Reports to: Curator in Photography and Assistant Director of the Museum’s International Program.

Research Residency:  In consultation with their supervisors, the Fellow may be approved (at a later date and subject to MoMA’s requirements) to develop and undertake an extended research residency (up to four weeks) in Mumbai during each year of the fellowship. Up to $5,000 per approved research residency in Mumbai may be available for each year of the fellowship.
