NanoScope Services Ltd provide Nano-Surgery of new chip designs, Nano-Analysis for Failure, Structure, Electrical or Materials problems, and advanced Microscopy of all types.  Our Bristol lab specialises in urgent R&D and testing projects for Semiconductor, Nanotech and Materials Science markets across the UK and Europe.  We offer consultancy to design a customer support package and then project manage this to a successful conclusion using all our internal resources and high-tech partners. In 2023 we achieved ISO9001:2015 accreditation and our Quality Management System supports our commitment to excellence. We are passionate about driving our customers’ projects forward and solving their technical issues to enable them to make intelligent business decisions about how to manage their company and their processes with reduced risk and enhanced technical knowledge. We are a small business looking to grow and this position is a key role in helping us to achieve this.  Its main purpose is to support lab technical functions with both routine and one-off technical tasks required to support complex projects for our customers.

The Package

At Tiro, we make great things happen for people. And that starts with you. In this role you’ll receive:
  • Starting salary of £15,000 - £17,500 per year (rising to National Minimum/Living Wage after 12 months)
  • 20 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Workings hours up to 40 hours per week
  • Monday to Friday, between 8:00AM - 6:00PM (Flexible Hours)
  • Occasional weekend and evening work required
  • Opportunity to progress with the company long-term

What will I be doing as an apprentice?

As Laboratory Technician Apprentice you will have a wide range of responsibilities, helping us to support our high tech customers, making this an interesting and varied role.  Learning takes place mainly during your employment with us through the development of on the job skills, supported by your College based off the job training and assessments. An ambitious and capable student will be given the opportunity to learn the real world application of a large number of state of the art techniques being applied at the forefront of modern technology development. You will work safely, under supervision where necessary, following strict health and safety guidelines and wearing PPE where required. Duties include:
  • working with customers/suppliers/partners/colleagues to support technical projects
  • compliance with health and safety/COSHH regulations
  • mechanical sample preparation
  • decapsulation of samples
  • chemical processing of samples
  • advanced microscopy (many types)
  • reliability testing of samples
  • electrical testing and micro-probing
  • setting up, testing, adjusting, calibrating and maintaining laboratory equipment
  • recording and analysing results
  • assisting with promotional activities including marketing communications and customer databases
  • working within a small team 
  • communicating with customers and partners across Europe

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

Experience

It would be beneficial if you already have some knowledge of Chemistry, Physics and Electronics, with an ability to work well with your hands. You will be thorough, with a meticulous eye for detail, with an interest in recording and analysing results in detail.

Whilst previous experience is great, we at Tiro are always open to wildcards. We’re not just interested in experience and qualifications; we’re looking for someone with the right attitude and aptitude to fit right in at NanoScope Services. 
Qualifications
Due to the technical nature of this role, we required applicants to have a GCSE in at least Maths, English and Science. 

While A Levels or equivalent qualifications in a related subject such as Chemistry, Physics, or Electronics will be useful, they are not a requirement.

But it's not all about school results, it’s about enthusiasm. In our experience the most successful apprentices are those who are driven to find out more about the sector, can be up front about what they do and don’t already know, are considerate, self-reflective, and impatient to learn the job role!
About You

You will have an interest in Maths, Electronics, Physics and/or Chemistry, with a strong work ethic and genuine desire to learn and develop in this industry. You will be honest and of high integrity. You can work well as a team, but also independently where needed.

To succeed in this apprenticeship, you’ll need bags of enthusiasm, be a fantastic collaborator and be hungry to learn!Even if this doesn’t sound quite like you, but you still think you could do a great job in the role, get in touch. We’re always open to wildcards.   

It would be beneficial if you have a Full Driving License and access to your own vehicle, but this is not a requirement. 

So how does the apprenticeship work?

At Tiro we’re obsessed with changing lives through science and technology apprenticeships so we can’t wait to have you on board.

Over 21 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6 hours of your working week on ‘off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments. Together this will count towards a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at NanoScope Services who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.

Being an apprentice is hands-on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a university or college environment.

The best part? You’ll be earning a salary while you gain your qualifications, meaning no huge student loans to pay back at the end of the programme!
