Sound like you?  If so, you belong with us!  The Tennyson Center for Children is in search of a Youth Treatment Counselor—to help kids and families who may otherwise be forgotten!  We need you to join in our vision and passion to serve and positively impact the lives of children across Colorado.

 

We are seeking experienced Youth Treatment Counselors in our School-Based (Day Treatment) and Residential programs, and have several options available. The Youth Treatment Counselor (YTC) is responsible for supporting a therapeutic residential program that fosters youth resilience and healing, informed by best practices and a deep understanding of trauma informed care. This position will be responsible for the supervision, engagement and support of children in a therapeutic residential setting by providing guidance, structure, routine and activities that align with agency values and therapeutic treatment goals. A successful YTC will have prior experience working with children with trauma, children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities or a strong desire to learn not only how to support children with trauma and intellectual disabilities, but a willingness to learn and implement the tenants of trauma informed care and therapeutic intervention strategies.

School-Based (Day Treatment) Youth Treatment Counselor

Hours: 

Salary Range

  • $22.00 --$24.00 Hourly 
  • New Hire Sign on Bonus: $600 after 90 days; additional $1000 after 6 months

 Tennyson Center’s K-12 Day Treatment School focuses on meeting the individualized needs of children and adolescents. The Day Treatment program provides a lower student-to-staff ratio that integrates social, emotional, behavioral, and academic learning and growth. Our goal is to create a learning environment where children and adolescents feel safe and supported to heal and develop the necessary skills to succeed in a less restrictive setting. 

  • Assist children in working towards self-directed treatment goals and IEP goals.
  • Collaborate with internal and external treatment team on progress and barriers as displayed in the school-based setting.
  • Provide clean, safe, and therapeutic learning environments by providing one on one tutoring, small group instruction, and maintenance of student engagement in academic and social emotional learning.
  • Follows all plans and directives from the interdisciplinary team; including but not limited to, the clients treatment plan, IEP, individualized crisis management plan and safety plan.
  • Consistently implements positive behavior supports through a strengths-based lens.
  • Completes required documentation in a timely and detailed manner. 
  • Completes required trainings as directed by Supervisor or Manager.
  • Provide basic personal care/ADL support as needed or directed by a child’s treatment plan.
  • Act as a mentor to the children through problem solving and role modeling.

 

Residential Youth Treatment Counselor 

Hours:

  • Wednesday-Sunday 2pm-10pm
  • Wednesday-Saturday AM/Split shift 6am and 2 pm in times.
  • Part time: Saturday/Sunday 8am-6pm; open to pick up (3rd and 4th shift)
  • Part time: Saturday/Sunday 2pm-10pm; open to pick up (3rd and 4th shift)

Salary Range:

  • $24 - $26 per hour 
  • New Hire Sign on Bonus: $600 after 90 days; additional $1000 after 6 months

Responsible for supporting a therapeutic residential program that fosters youth resilience and healing, informed by best practices and a deep understanding of trauma informed care. This position will be responsible for the supervision, engagement and support of children in a therapeutic residential setting by providing guidance, structure, routine and activities that align with agency values and therapeutic treatment goals. A successful YTC will have prior experience working with children with trauma, children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities or a strong desire to learn not only how to support children with trauma and intellectual disabilities, but a willingness to learn and implement the tenants of trauma informed care and therapeutic intervention strategies. 

  • Assist clients in identifying and working toward self-directed treatment goals. 
  • Collaborate with the internal and external treatment team on progress and barriers in therapeutic treatment goals for the client's home and community environments.
  • Provide clean, safe, and therapeutic environments for the clients at all times.
  • Engage clients in social emotional skill acquisition and practice.  
  • Provide meaningful, community integration opportunities in conjunction with the Residential Case Manager
  • Provide advocacy by ensuring the rights, dignity and the choices are respected and valued
  • Provide personal care/ADL support as needed or directed by a child’s treatment plan
  • Follow all plans and directives from the interdisciplinary team
  • Provide feedback to Milieu Manager and Residential Director on what may or may not be working for children in care
  • Complete required training as directed by supervisor or the TCC Training Manager
  • Ensure positive behavior supports are being implemented on a milieu and in the community consistently to support and encourage clients from a strengths-based lens. 
  • Complete timely shift documentation

 

Overnight Residential Youth Treatment Counselor

   Hours:

  • Overnight shift- (must cover a Friday and Saturday) 10pm-8am
  • Mid shift- Friday-Monday 1-11pm

Salary Range:

  • $25 - $26 hr.
  • Plus $1.00/hour extra for overnight shifts
  • *New Hire Sign on Bonus: $600 after 90 days; additional $1000 after 6 months

 

  • Assist clients in identifying and working toward self-directed treatment goals. 
  • Collaborate with the internal and external treatment team on progress and barriers in therapeutic treatment goals for the clients home and community environments.
  • Provide clean, safe, and therapeutic environments for the clients at all times.
  • Engage clients in social emotional skill acquisition and practice.  
  • Ensure positive behavior supports are being implemented on a milieu and in the community consistently to support and encourage clients from a strengths-based lens. 
  • Assist and support clients in getting ready for, and transitioning away from, school.
  • Take clients into the community to provide age normative childhood experiences.
  • Supervise and monitor clients during all wake and sleeping hours. 
  • Utilize trauma informed therapeutic interventions for behavior management (both verbal and non-verbal) and physical managements as a last resort when imminent safety is at risk.

Physical Requirements for all roles

  • Must be able to lift 25/50 lbs. or more. 
  • Must be able to assume and maintain a variety of postures such as kneeling, squatting, crawling, sitting, standing for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to perform or assist with physical behavioral interventions.

  • Home like, residential setting on the Tennyson Center Campus
  • Potential for loud, high-energy environment 
  • Community/outdoor environments for scheduled activities in varying weather conditions

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA degree in a Human Services field (preferred, but not required), but an equivalent combination of education and experience IS required.
  • Must be willing to contribute to a positive home environment for children and collaborative working relationships with TCC staff. 
  • All candidates must have or qualify to obtain a current Colorado driver license. (Must obtain Colorado license within 30 days of employment.) 
  • All positions require a criminal CBI background check, FBI fingerprint check, State of CO child abuse check, DMV driving record check, pre-employment drug test, pre-employment physical, academic credential verification, and reference check. 
  • Experience in a residential setting or with children with developmental disabilities preferred. 
  • Motivation to obtain specialized training that would enhance your daily work and professional development preferred. 
  • Must be willing to complete training in physical behavior intervention strategies
  • QMAP through an approved state training entity preferred but not required if applicant is willing to take training with an approved entity,

 

All positions require the successful completion of a criminal CBI background check, FBI fingerprint check, State of CO child abuse check (TRAILS), DMV driving record check, pre-employment drug test, pre-employment physical, academic credential verification, and reference check.
