Job Descrption

The American Chemical Society looking for an enthusiastic team member who loves science and enjoys sharing that passion with others. If you can read scientific papers, are skilled at writing and editing, and value chemistry as a means for improving all people’s lives, then we have a place for you on our team of dedicated science communicators.  We work in a fast-paced multimedia group, and the News Editor will research, write, edit, develop and coordinate a broad range of ACS science-related materials under strict deadlines. The person in this position reports directly to the Senior Manager, Media Relations & Science Communications, within the Communications Division.

 

 

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

  • Serve as primary editor of press releases written by science writers on the team, as well as freelancers.
  • Review and identify scientific papers that are newsworthy and suitable to write a press release about.
  • Pitch ideas for compelling news stories from ACS journal content and abstracts of ACS meeting presentations.
  • Write accurate, high-quality press releases about articles published in ACS’ more than 80 peer-reviewed journals, as well as presentations at two ACS meetings each year.
  • Respond to media requests by pairing journalists with a media-trained chemist.
  • Work closely with the production team to identify items for multimedia content and support creation of that content.
  • Copyedit and fact-check materials to ensure that the content is factually correct and conforms to AP and other style guidelines.
  • Create/adapt content for social media.
  • Multimedia experience is a plus.

 

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or closely related field.
  • 8+ years with a bachelor's degree; or 6+ years and a master's degree; or a PhD with 3+ years of experience of writing and editing science articles for a general audience.
  • Experience working in a busy environment, demonstrating the ability to effectively prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work well within a team to achieve organizational goals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Previous work for a scientific non-profit organization or educational institution is a plus.
  • Must understand scientific content in journal articles and have the ability to translate that into language a general audience can understand.
  • Careful attention to detail to produce high-quality and accurate content.
  • Familiarity with AP style is desired.

Location:  DC (with hybrid days-in-office option)
