Job Description:

This is an exciting opportunity for you to be part of the Contracts Operations Team wherein you’ll help develop the future strategy of the organization as well as delivering on the strategy across the globe. The strategy is expected to deliver large change in specific areas such as People, Processes and Platforms. In this role, you’ll have the chance to heavily interact with the Contracts Innovation & Assurance Teams as well as the Contracts Leadership Team & Extended Leadership Team.

The T&S Contracts Team is part of Commercial Operations and provides a commercially driven service to the trading teams within T&S. The Contracts Team is an energetic and fast-paced evolving environment, where people are encouraged to play an active role in shaping the way the business is run, whilst adhering to the compliance framework across the business; as such, key to this posting is the ability to be strategic, flexible, adaptable, open-minded, goal-orientated, and control framework conscious.                    

You will be expected to take ownership and accountability for complex projects in this area and it should be noted that, due to the nature of the business and the volumes in the trading environment, the successful candidate will be expected to absorb considerable amounts of complex information within a short timeframe and develop and/or implement new and or adjusted ways of working, systems, and organizational change. Some travelling might be required.

What’s the role?

The Contracts Strategy Manager will play a key role on the Shell Energy Contracts Team. You will help the Leadership Team (LT) and Extended Leadership Team (XLT) develop and implement a change journey for the Global Contract Operations group.  The journey will focus on implementing large and dynamic change in three focused areas – People, Platforms, and Performance.  This will involve review, analysis and assistance in current business processes and contracts systems with the goal of assisting the management team to develop and implement a strategy to be more efficient and take advantage of technology and a lower cost business model. 

The Contracts Strategy Manager offers you a dynamic and impactful role as a Change Manager at a pivotal time for Shell as it navigates the opportunities and risks of the Energy Transition. You will get first-hand, in-depth exposure to the business processes and control framework across our entire Contracts Operations Team.

Working with top-class colleagues who will support you will build new processes and streamline control activities as well as improving team performance and supporting organisational leadership.

The role of the Contracts Strategy Manager requires the individual to work closely with the Leadership Team of the Contracts Operations and to connect with the people in the Frontline and interact with our several supporting functions, such as BIAMs, Legal, Compliance, Finance, and other functions, delivering the following:

  • Responsible to develop, co-creating as necessary, manage and deliver specific and, in some cases, improvement projects/initiatives including drafting of relevant documentation e.g. playbooks
  • Shaping, developing, and executing the Contracts Operations Team vision/strategy to be implemented over the next few years.
  • Serving as a key focal to solve challenges and drive communication within the Contracts organization and outside, including communication to senior management.
  • Fostering open mindset culture through consistent and sustainable application of learning opportunities by means of displaying problem solving capabilities to find solutions for operational, compliance, product, commercial and strategic issues facing the business.

This role report directly to the Global Contracts Operations Manager.   Relevant exposure with higher levels in many organizations is expected.

What we need from you

We are keen to speak from individuals with extensive experience in large scale business transformation projects and/or operational efficiency ideally in an energy trading environment with exposure to various commodities.

You’ll also bring in the following skills and/or experience:

  • Outstanding commercial judgement and ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities.
  • Demonstrated resilience and learning agility in ambiguous and unfamiliar situations.
  • Familiar with and able to adhere to project management methodologies and tools.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong knowledge of ETRMs
  • Awareness or knowledge with contractual requirements

This role is strategic in nature and requires higher level thought and strong communication and stakeholder management skills.  The candidate must have the ability to manage time well and manage day to day activities and balance against strategic commitments and timelines that require further planning and analysis.  This role requires the ability to quickly learn and understand new concepts and processes and create optional models utilizing risk/reward scenarios and framework.

The successful candidate must possess:

  • Ability to motivate and drive the performance and delivery of projects/initiatives, some of which who may be outside of direct line management and single out key issues to drive the team toward solutions.
  • Use interpersonal and team leadership skills to influence senior business leadership to gain support for business change/transformation activities.
  • Courage to intervene and challenge status quo and take decisions under pressure whilst maintaining a delivery focus with a strong drive to deliver on commitments.
  • Broad experience with business management, operations coupled with outstanding qualities of independence, objectivity, and analysis.
  • Resilient, self-motivated, organized, and adaptable with developed presentation skills & ability to communicate credibly with senior management.
