In this role you will lead a team of software engineers responsible for our Rapid7 data platform. The teams are responsible for delivering the foundations of Rapid7’s data products on the cloud-based Insight Platform. You will work closely with an outstanding peer group of highly skilled engineers in order to prioritise and set direction of the teams.

About the Team

This data team is responsible for taking the data of all of Rapid7's products, combining them, and making them accessible across different systems. This team, being central to the Rapid7 data platform, builds highly scalable and reliable software to support the volume of data for all Rapid7 products. The solutions implemented by this team help provide our customers with an accurate picture of their attack surface across Rapid7 and third-party solutions.

About the Role

As a Software Engineering manager for the Data Platform Team you will have many responsibilities. You will be responsible for managing the day to day operations for the Data Platform Team and addressing any issues that arise quickly and effectively. As well as this, you will coach, provide support and mentor your team. The role also requires you to have a deep understanding of the system which includes writing and reviewing code. 

You will also be responsible for keeping track of the projects the teams are working on, facilitating cross-team discussions when necessary and deciding on the future direction of the team (what projects they will focus on next). You will collaborate with Product, DevOps and other development teams to deliver best-in-class solutions for our customers.

You'll work directly with, but not limited to, the following technologies:

Java 21, Spring, Reactor, AWS (EC2, VPC networking, S3, SQS, SNS, etc.), FoundationDB, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Jenkins, GitHub

In this role, you will:

• Directly manage multiple team members, coach and mentor team members, including scoping work and prioritising tasks

• Mentor engineers and help grow their skills, identify growth areas, set expectations and provide feedback

• Lead the platform and solution architecture to enhance and add new features leveraging Event-driven Architecture, REST-based web APIs, middleware and AWS services.

• Managing projects and socialising progress across engineering teams and leadership

• Keep a keen eye on quality, and continue to drive improvements to testing, monitoring and alerting

• Work cross functionally with PM, and Engineering to address specific customer pain points and to think strategically about the future direction of the product

• Work closely with other managers and teams across the Insight Platform to align efforts and initiatives

• Kickstart new ideas, build proof of concepts and jumpstart newly funded projects

• Lead JIRA boards, architectural discussions, and technical design sessions

The skills you’ll bring include:

• A track record for mentoring and growing software engineers at all levels

• A demonstrable passion for all things software engineering, including knowledge of designing and implementing reliable architectures in cloud environments

• An understanding of the software development lifecycle

• Experience working cross-functionally with PM and Engineering teams

• Experience with managing multiple, high-impact projects

• Capable of managing through high-intensity situations when they arise

• BEng, BSc or related technical field or equivalent practical experience
