Junior-level researcher – RF Signatures

Responsibilities

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic, motivated individual to join a leading global Science and Technology organisation as part of the Radio Frequency (RF) Signatures team, focusing on the RF/Microwave bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. You will apply your knowledge of electromagnetics across a variety of interesting and engaging subject areas concerning the design, simulation, and measurement of LO materials and devices. The group is experienced in the development and characterisation of innovative electromagnetic propagation and scattering control solutions across a number of different industries, both within the defence community and commercially, such as for renewable energy. 

This unique opportunity is Farnborough based and will offer the successful candidate the opportunity to work across the entire electromagnetic solution development process, assisting in the development and deployment of novel technology solutions: from material and circuit concept development and simulation, to fabrication, measurement and analysis of solutions.

Responsibilities will include:

• Use your scientific experience and knowledge to deliver RF signatures project work in subject areas such as electromagnetic theory, modelling, measurement, and technology development.
• Develop scientific knowledge and expertise in a number of domains linked to the core business of the wider Electromagnetics Group – e.g. electromagnetic theory, metamaterials, antennas, radar absorbing materials
• Collaborate with the wider QinetiQ technical community to develop future innovative technologies and solutions
• Manage your technical output and provide regular feedback regarding progress, both within the RF Signatures team and to our customer community.

Requirements & Essential Qualifications:

• UK national (British Citizenship)
• A degree or higher degree in a topic area relevant to electromagnetics. A PhD or equivalent associated experience is not necessary but is desirable
• An interest in signatures and/or the domain of electromagnetics relating to RF control and propagation, such as RF transmission, reflection and absorption optimisation

• An understanding of electromagnetic theory and measurement methods, such as relevant degree-level courses or projects
• A willingness to learn and develop new skills for the delivery of current and future work opportunities
• Be competent in the use of data management and analysis software, such as Matlab or R
• Good written and verbal presentation skills with the ability to sustain a rational argument and present recommendations to a wide range of people
• Knowledge of Microsoft Applications (e.g. Excel, Access, Word)
• Desirable – Have an understanding and working knowledge of electromagnetic modelling software tools, for example CST microwave studio or COMSOL Multiphysics.

Other requirements:

• If successful, you must either be a holder of or be prepared to be put through a minimum of Ministry of Defence security clearance (SC) vetting.
