What you’ll be responsible for
We do everything we can to make sure that our WwTW’s and networks run smoothly 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sometimes, events happen that are outside of our control, and this is when our Control Hub can really make a positive impact on our business.
As a Waste Response and Data Technician you will identify any issues which have the potential to impact customers, the environment or require urgent response. You will identify and mobilise the appropriate front-line response and support them with direction and coordination throughout the event to completion.
- Monitoring multiple data sources to identify issues on Wastewater assets and networks which are impacting / may impact on Wastewater performance metrics. Examples include asset alarms, cello alarms, asset performance data, regulatory, stakeholder and customer contacts.
- Manage all Customer and Regulatory reported pollutions across our operating area, liaising closely with Pollution technicians, Natural Resources Wales and the Environment Agency (England), through to closure of incident. Ensure all responses are compliant with regulatory and internal targets.
- Utilise corporate systems and asset information to triage and identify asset and network problems, identify whether an AGA/BGA site visit is required and coordinate operational response. Our operational response will focus on ensuring that pollution incidents are resolved as quickly as possible, whilst ensuring that data is captured to support pollution outcomes.
- Monitor the Real Time Spill Map, undertake impact assessments and ensure appropriate response is coordinated from the centre. Escalation will be required in line with agreed incident response triggers and provide technical information to AGA/BGA teams to respond as appropriate.
- Coordinate the delivery of pollution response plans to prevent / mitigate discharges / spills affecting the environment. Examples include sewer jetting, pumping station / WwTW maintenance, tankering, sending environmental notices and sampling.
- Work collaboratively with the Customer Resolution team and schedule waste network teams to respond to sewer flooding incidents. Liaise directly with customers to keep them updated on our response.
- Update corporate systems with required asset information relating to our timely response and accurate pollution reporting within the business.
- Track pollution impacting discharges and spills during events to allow for real-time reporting. Support any post-event analysis to ensure that reporting is accurate.
- Liaise directly with the Pollution Prevention Technicians ensuring that all procedural requirements to mitigate pollutions are met.
- Provide information for regulatory reporting of pollution events/incidents (i.e., NRW/EA notifiable incidents) both for initial notification and further detailed reports. Participate in the Post Incident Review Process (PIR), carry out analysis post-event’s and provide information to ensure that any lessons can be learned and improvements made.
- Collaborate with front-line Operational teams to ensure that any learnings from events are captured, improvement plans are developed, and relevant asset information is updated.
- Support the Operational Response Managers & Control Managers in compiling shift update / hand over reports which will be available to the wider business.
- Participate in a standby rota and undertake any other duties that may be required to meet business needs.
- Assist the OR and OC teams by covering workstations as required to deliver 24/7 service, minimise disruption and support colleague wellbeing.
