What you’ll be responsible for


As Operational Response Shift Manager, you will be the operational lead for the Operational Response Team for that shift, having operational oversight of all events and incidents managed by the Response Team.. You will need to be a strong Operational decision maker, with extensive experience in the management of operations and incident/event management.

 

  • Responsible for Health and Safety of the shift team. Implementing the management framework, procedures and monitoring plan for the team. Ensuring compliance with statutory & legislative requirements.
  • Act as initial escalation for all incidents and support the team in triage, planning and resolution of incidents. Coordinate the team to ensure effective response to multiple events which may occur simultaneously. Sign off risk assessment/method statements developed by the team and support local operational managers by overseeing delivery of planned work out of hours.
  • Ensure any activities carried out or instructed by the team are accompanied by Risk Assessment/Method Statements adhering to all Safety, Quality and Public Health requirements. Support and direct field teams to ensure activities are undertaken are in line with health & safety procedures, ensuring safety and quality are at the forefront in work carried out.
  • Carry out effective line management of teams working within the shift, including 121s, team meetings and performance management duties if required. 
  • Escalate and engage Silver/Gold incident managers as required to ensure operational incidents are effectively managed with the right level of governance and in line with Security and Emergency Measures Direction (SEMD) requirements. You will make decisions and manage events where they fall in line with agreed thresholds of approval, and within agreed parameters. 
  • Work alongside Operations Support functions to support implementation of strategies to improve operational response efficiency. Undertake performance analysis and identify areas of improvement, both in terms of Operational Response, and in terms of assets, systems, and processes to maximise efficient response.
  • Coordinate planned activities with operational teams to ensure consistency of planning and to ensure risk is managed. Be a conduit link between operational departments to ensure resource is effectively managed when undertaking planned work (especially out of hours)
  • Continually review asset and team performance and identify appropriate and timely intervention to prevent failures, maintain security of supply and maximise cost efficiency.
  • Ensure accurate logs are taken by the team and that all regulatory required evidence is collated during events. Ensure all regulatory external liaison is completed where required during incidents (e.g., notifying regulator of pollution events/notifiable incidents and providing supporting data)
  • Act as support to Silver and Gold Standby Managers in the event of large-scale incidents, supporting with Situational Reporting, resource and welfare management, logistics and operation of assets as required to ensure customer impact is minimised.
  • Work with local operational teams to review incidents and support in identification and escalation of repeat events to improve Asset resilience.
  • Compile shift reports and ensure all information is adequately transferred between shift teams to ensure continuity of service
  • Ensure all incident response is managed in line with business continuity plans, Incident Response Manuals and in line with SEMD procedures, following appropriate levels of escalation in each of these instances to ensure SEMD is fully complied with. Additionally, event preparation and highlighting areas of vulnerability for future business continuity will be essential to ensure operations can continue even in extreme events.

About you

 

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

 

  • Degree/HND/HNC in STEM Subject or equivalent operational experience  
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience operating at a supervisory, management or analytical level within Operations in the Water Industry, Utilities or Engineering sectors.  
  • Strong Operational decision maker, with extensive experience in the management of Safety, operations and incident/event management. 
  • Proven track record of managing teams and taking ownership of operational incidents to ensure a successful outcome
  • Ability to prioritise effectively under pressure and triage multiple issues and events simultaneously    
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of competency in problem solving in high pressure situations
  • Ability to communicate and build strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels (i.e Senior Operations Managers, field teams and external authorities) 
  • Able to deal with external stakeholders in a professional manner promoting a positive image of DCWW at all times
  • A team player and leader who understands the importance of ownership and accountability.
  • Fully competent with DCWW Systems
  • Full knowledge of DCWW Operational Safety and Quality procedures, as well as a good understanding of Incident Management and Security Response procedures.
  • Experience gained in the industry to ensure full compliance and adherence to all H&S issues

Good to know

 

  • You will be working 12-hour shifts, typically 4 on 4 off, with 2 early shifts (6am - 6pm) followed by 2 late shifts (6pm - 6am). This pattern is accompanied by a 25% shift allowance, with annual leave and bank holidays built in.
  • Car allowance included (£5k)
