Within the South East region Operational Technology team, we have a vacancy for an experienced Automation & Control Systems Engineer to join Welsh Water. The position will support a wide range of industrial control systems – such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) installations, Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA) servers and Remote Telemetry Units (RTU) on water and wastewater assets across a defined operational area.
As part of a team of Automation Specialists, you will provide front line support in both a reactive and planned capacity. We are the first responders for major control system faults and provide this service 24/7 using a standby rota, fixing PLC, SCADA, and Telemetry faults everywhere from Bridgend to Chepstow, Mid Wales and out to Worcester.
Key to the success of our team is working together as team. We support each other to assist with fault resolution and you will be a key player in this. Working together effectively as a team is an essential criterion for the role. Even when we are lone working, team support is key.
You will undertake in- house micro projects e.g., replacing standalone obsolete PLCs with current, modern equivalent. You will support major capital schemes from an operational perspective, ensuring effective handover at key stages of the project.
You will collaborate with our operational teams in positive atmospheres to undertake and deliver solutions to allow Welsh Water to provide a seamless 24/7 service to its customers. We provide development opportunities, training and support to Engineers who are looking to further their knowledge and skills within a varied and wide operating environment – and welcome individuals from all backgrounds who would like to join our team and progress their career.
What you will do:
• Provide local and remote support to reactive issues on our OT hardware and software – participating in a standby rota for out of hours faults and failures,
• Undertake planned maintenance on our Operational Technology (OT) hardware and software.
• Assist with the development of OT improvement initiatives by optimising control and communication systems.
• Support capital improvement schemes to enhance our water and wastewater assets.
• Develop and update technical support documentation.

We welcome applicants who have previous experience within a Process Control environment and educated to at least HNC level in a relevant discipline (or can demonstrate equivalent knowledge and experience).
Applicants will have ideally had experience in working with industrial low voltage electrical systems and/or maintaining control system installations.
Required/Essential
• HNC or equivalent in Electrical/Electronic discipline
• Minimum 5 GCSEs or equivalent which must include English and Maths
• Windows IT systems experience
• Computer literate in standard Microsoft products e.g., Word, Excel
• Full, current UK driving licence and car.
• Ability to commute to remote sites across South East Wales as required.
• Excellent team worker with ability to use own initiative. Occasional lone working
Desirable
You will have experience in the following areas:
• PLC’s (Mitsubishi, Siemens & Rockwell)
• SCADA (Servelec/Ovarro, & Siemens PCS7)
• Industrial Networking (CC-link, Profibus, Modbus & Ethernet)
• RTU Telemetry Outstations and Communications (PSTN, M2M, GSM)
• Linux OS experience
