What you’ll be responsible for

 

As Production Manager you will be responsible for:

 

  • Delivering of water production operations within a defined geographical area ensuring efficient utilisation of water resources, protection of water quality standards and managing area operating teams to meet exacting health and safety standards and cost efficiency targets.
  • Ensuring the performance of water production assets (primarily water treatment and raw water assets) in a defined geographical area to enable Welsh Water to become an exemplary water business, whilst reducing costs and delivering a safer working environment. 
  • Managing and motivating the area production team to comply with standards ensuring public health is not compromised and all Water Services business plan targets are achieved.
  • Providing leadership in implementing changes to working practices within operational and M,E, and I teams to improve operational effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Managing team and individual performance, identifying training and development needs and ensuring competence levels are sustained in view of changing technical standards and working practices.
  • Health and Safety management responsibility for all those involved in the delivery of water production within the geographic operating area, including direct and sub contract workforces.  
  • Operating to and supporting improvement of robust management framework, procedures and monitoring plan. Ensuring compliance with all statutory and legislative requirements where appropriate.
  • Ensuring Drinking Water Safety Plans are kept up to date and used for production assets
  • Ensuring that the treatment of potable water supplies is undertaken to the highest expected standards and managing resources to deliver safe, clean drinking water.
  • Ensuring that all Water Services production targets are hit, achieving optimal water resource and treatment asset utilisation, whilst delivering sector leading water quality.
  • Delivering serviceability targets on all relevant water production targets for the operating area
  • Ensuring that the operation of our water production assets is undertaken in line with quality management procedures and is compliant with all relevant statutory and legislative requirements.
  • Ensuring that planned preventative maintenance work is undertaken as scheduled.
  • Managing the operational area to deliver the lowest cost of service in terms of operating efficiency as measured against Opex and Capex targets.  
  • Ensuring all water production activities are undertaken in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner.
  • Developing an effective and motivated workforce ensuring good communication and teamwork.
  • Establishing a high performance culture with appropriate training and full implementation of new ways of working required to achieve both quality improvements and cost efficiencies
  • Be an effective team player, supporting other team colleagues and promoting best practice and standardisation to improve business performance.
  • Ensure that the production operational area has adequate emergency response provision which is tested regularly
  • The successful candidate will be required to take part in the Silver Standby Rota
  • Undertaking any other duties as required to meet the needs of the business.

Who you’ll work with

 

 

Internal

  • Strong working relationships within the Water Services team particularly the regional scientific teams, DWSP teams, planned maintenance teams, local asset management teams
  • Regular liaison with the water quality regulation team, asset strategy, capital delivery, emergency planning, and operational control centre
  • Advice and support from the procurement, finance and HR teams

External

  • Key contract partners to ensure Bought in Services are being executed safely, cost effectively and at appropriate levels of service
  • DWI as required in support of the Water Quality team
  • Health and Safety Executive as required
  • Environment Agency in relation to discharges and abstractions
  • Local authorities and emergency planning groups

About you

 

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

 

  • A higher national diploma, or equivalent, in engineering or science 
  • A proven operational manager with extensive water treatment operational experience and ability to demonstrate a proven track record of success
  • Experience gained through thorough understanding of water service delivery and competent in terms of raw water management, water treatment and water quality in relationship to public health
  • Able to demonstrate commercial experience in cost management and delivering efficiencies in operational budgets
  • Able to demonstrate experience of  working with Drinking Water Safety Plans with the technical ability to assess risks to water quality, review asset performance and implement improvement actions
  • Experience of managing operational teams, inspiring and motivating teams, successfully implementing initiatives, managing change and developing an effective water production team
  • An ability to think strategically but with a strong focus on ensuring day to day water production operates effectively and efficiently
