Job Title: Lab Assistant I

Department: Laboratory

Reports To: Senior Mgr. of Lab Services

Location: Hospital/Clinic

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt








Job Summary:

Responsible for the collection of blood and other specimens from patients for the purpose of testing and analysis. Performs basic laboratory functions that support the laboratory mission with an emphasis on customer service. Lab Assistant I is cross trained to perform duties including: laboratory reception, specimen collection, processing of specimens, and waived testing.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Promotes an engaged and positive environment among the laboratory team.

  2. Specimen collection (blood, urine, throat, and nasopharyngeal).

  3. Verifies patient identity using two patient identifiers.

  4. Maintains a clean and injury free environment for patients, self, and employees by observing and adhering to all established safety and blood borne pathogen protocol.

  5. Accurately interprets written/verbal physician orders.

  6. Follows all established procedures and protocols with proper documentation.

  7. Adheres to the AIDET practices for excellent customer service.

  8. Performs waived testing according to policy and procedures.

  9. Participates in proficiency testing in all areas of competence.

  10. Follow all regulatory guidelines including Joint Commission, OSHA, CLIA, and HIPAA.

  11. Performs all other related duties as assigned.


Accountabilities for all Employees:

  1. Adheres to the Hutchinson Health Employee Values.

  2. Maintains confidentiality of the organization and patients.

  3. Reports any health/medical errors.

  4. Observes all Environment of Care policies and reports safety risks or hazards immediately.


Education, Training or Degree Required:

  1. Must be able to read, write, make simple calculations and follow oral and written directions accurately.

  2. High school graduate or equivalent is preferred. Experience in a medical related field or an applied science degree is desirable.


License/Registration/Certification Required: (will be primary source verified by HR)

  1. Certification in phlebotomy (preferred).


Experience and Skills: (indicate preferred or required)

  1. Must be accurate and precise (required).

  2. Manual dexterity (required)

  3. Able to work independently (required)

  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills (required)

  5. Competent computer skills to navigate within a laboratory information system. (required)

  6. Possess a high degree of discretion and confidentiality.

  7. Phlebotomy experience preferred.
