Secondment Opportunity.

The Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) network stretches across the UK. We work alongside our partners to thwart terrorist planning and help bring perpetrators to justice.

The Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands (CTP WM) Prevent team safeguard people and communities from the threat of terrorism. 

The West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit (WMCTU) coordinates the regional counter terrorist response and provides specialist support to police forces in Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Mercia and the West Midlands.

As a Prevent Supervisor you’ll be a regional resource and the current vacancy will be based at our modern offices near to Birmingham International Airport. The role is Monday to Friday 0800-1600 with the requirement to undertake on call duties on weekdays and weekends, and you will also be expected to support the Prevent duty sergeant role.

 

The role

You’ll deliver the Prevent agenda across the wider policing family and external partnership, facilitating engagement with local policing teams, partner agencies both statutory and non-statutory and with communities to safeguard people from terrorism. Experience of managing risk, threat and vulnerability as well as in safeguarding vulnerable individuals is essential.

You’ll supervise a team of police staff and police officers, coordinating and tasking their activity. You’ll have oversight of Prevent Case Management (PCM) including triage/risk assessment of referrals and subsequent case management within the channel and police led space through the delivery of appropriate case management tactics. 

You’ll work collaboratively with statutory prevent partners as well as internal partners implementing and strengthening the Prevent strategy. 

The role will include supporting CT operations, providing consequence management planning and delivery as well as safeguarding support to CT investigations and working towards ensuring our communities are resilient to radicalisation and terrorism. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Co-ordinating processes and practices to ensure the most effective recording and triaging of prevent referrals.
  • Identifying and working with key individual networks across the West Midlands Region to embed safeguarding in all CT activity, building relationships and supporting strategic partners with advice and guidance around police activity in Prevent and CT policing.
  • Directing and supervising officers managing the safeguarding of individuals of interest, taking into account those who have access to or influence over children or vulnerable adults.
  • Preparing comprehensive briefing papers, managing & co-ordinating the delivery of Prevent briefings to local policing staff, partners and communities.
  • Gathering and disseminating information, including community tensions relating to CT issues, developing plans and managing and directing colleagues to action and address any issues.
  • Overseeing consequence management for designated area to limit the impact executive action taken has on local communities inclusive of community tensions, media coverage, stakeholders and any longer term issues which may arise.
  • Identifying skills gaps amongst Prevent staff and seek investment in up skilling and training where required to maintain and improve effective delivery of the Prevent strategy.
  • Representing Prevent in meetings locally and regionally and direct the team’s activity as per the briefing and tasking processes.
  • Contributing towards achieving and maintaining prevent objectives in line with the Prevent deliverables.
  • Managing the team’s workload and prioritise actions/resources.

 

Essential skills

A solid understanding of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. 

Understanding of the Prevent strategy and Prevent duty and its relationship with other areas of CONTEST.

Experience of partnership working including multi-agency problem solving.

Well-developed interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.

High standards of integrity and discretion.

An ability to develop and maintain relationships with key strategic stakeholders 

Willingness to travel regionally and to undertake on call duties on weekdays and weekends.

 

Desirable

Experience in supervising both police officers and staff.

Basic knowledge of TACT legislation.

Knowledge of Counter Terrorism Unit structures.

Experience of being involved in sensitive investigations.

Security Checks

 

This role is subject to successful completion of Enhanced SC Vetting.

You must be a British citizen to work for the Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands (CTPWM). If you hold dual nationality, with the primary nationality British, you may also be considered. For the purposes of safeguarding national security, applicants will be required to hold or acquire the appropriate national security vetting clearance as above.

Additional information

The position is offered as a 2 year secondment to West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit. To qualify, you must confirm in your application that you have received approval, through the process established by your Chief Officer, for secondment. 

This vacancy is open to Substantive and Temporary Sergeants also.
