London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust

The band 4 role of Medical Technical Officer will involve laboratory-processing of samples, preparation/dispensing of radiopharmaceuticals (as well as sometimes administering them to patients) and assisting in various other aspects of admin and cleaning and disinfection of the facility.
Main duties of the job
• Perform aseptic preparation, dispensing and packaging of radiopharmaceuticals and dispatching them to within the Trust and externally to external customers.
• Perform blood cell labelling procedures in accordance with safe practices and following departmental Standard Operational Procedures.
• Participate and assist in the departmental Quality Assurance and Quality Control programmes (including Audits), as well as in helping to support Clinical-Trials and Research-and-Development.
• Acknowledge customer orders and action appropriately.
• Place orders directly from suppliers and through internal e-procurement channels.
• Carry... out stock checks ensuring we maintain adequate levels of consumables at all times.
• Assist in producing invoices for customers outlining radiopharmaceuticals ordered throughout the month.
• Demonstrate own work to less experienced staff, junior staff (e.g. Band-2 Assistant Technical Officer, Band-3 MTOs), students and/or new staff, as well as occasionally also giving training in specific aspects of own work to some of those staff.
• Attend and complete all areas of training and continuing professional development (CPD) provided for them by the Trust and department, prior to-, and throughout their time in the role.

Person Specification
Education/ Qualifications
• At least BTECs/A-Levels/Diplomas or equivalent in physical/biological sciences.
• Mathematical aptitude.
• A Science Degree or evidence of broad and in-depth training experience at or near equivalent level.
Knowledge & Experience
• Scientific knowledge of and experience in established Good Laboratory/Manufacturing Practices (GLP/GMP).
• Good numeracy.
• Established training and experience of working at AfC Band-3 or higher in similar role, ideally as a Medical Physics Technician (involving Aseptic Radiopharmacy / Clinical DEXA Bone-Densitometry / in-vitro Clinical Nuclear Medicine services).
• Computer-literacy.
• Experience of working in a clinical environment.
• Advanced scientific knowledge of and experience in established Good Laboratory/Manufacturing Practice (GLP/GMP).
• Scientific/Technical knowledge & experience in 'Radiation Protection' and/or 'Diagnostic Radiology QA'.
• Some knowledge and experience of radioactive waste management.
Skills, Abilities and Attributes
• Dexterous, with high-levels of hand-eye coordination.
• Skilled in operations of Radiopharmacies, DEXA Bone-Density Scanners, and in-vitro (non-imaging) Nuclear Medicine tests.
• Use of various specialised work Computer-software.
• Work meticulously and also input data accurately.
• Ability to concentrate/focus for long periods of time.
• Ability to use initiative and mostly work unsupervised.
• Ability to make decisions based on factual/ situational analyses and to prioritise tasks in own work.
• Ability to work calmly under pressure and sometimes under stress.
• Team Player, with good interpersonal skills.
• Good time-keeping.
• Significant manual handling capacity and stamina.
• Willingness to undertake further training as/when needed.
• Willingness and ability to multitask sometimes.
• Awareness of Health and Safety issues in a working environment.
• Flexible-hours working.
