An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced and innovative Speech and Language Therapist to provide clinical and professional leadership to the Adult Community Speech and Language Therapy Service, based at East Ham Care Centre in the London Borough of Newham.
The service provides specialist assessment and intervention to adults in the community with acquired communication and swallowing disorders, secondary to a wide range of conditions. The team works closely with SLT and MDT colleagues within the Trust, as well as external agencies.
The post holder is expected to hold a clinical caseload, as well as lead on service development, quality improvement and provide supervision. Excellent leadership, interpersonal and collaborative working skills are essential for the role. Experience of working with adults with... acquired disorders of communication and swallowing, secondary to neurological conditions, dementia, mental health, palliative and end of life care, respiratory or gastro conditions, and general elderly frailty, is necessary.
Main duties of the job
• To take responsibility for the delivery of comprehensive and high-quality SLT services to adults and elders with acquired communication and swallowing disorders across Community Health Newham.
• To ensure that the service is effective, well coordinated and responsive to the changing needs of the local population and that SLT teams work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to provide integrated care for clients.
• To take responsibility for the development and maintenance of effective working relationships with colleagues at Newham University Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust and other partner organisations.

Person Specification
Education/ Qualification/ Training
Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent.
Health and Care Professions Council Licence to Practice (HCPC).
Evidence of successful completion of advanced dysphagia management training, including instrumental assessment e.g. VFS, FEES.
Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
Evidence of management and leadership training.
Experience
At least 5 years post-qualification experience of working with adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders in community, acute or rehabilitation settings.
Experience of working in adult neurology, general elderly and frailty, dementia and mental health, palliative and end-of-life care.
Experience of working successfully within a multidisciplinary team.
Experience of planning and evaluating service policies and guidelines.
Experience of developing, planning and delivering training to other professionals and other relevant agencies.
Experience of supervising junior staff members and students.
Experience of assessment for and use of alternative and augmentative communication systems.
Knowledge and Skills
Extensive knowledge and skills in assessment, and implementing intervention for adults with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties.
Extensive knowledge of SLT evidence-based / best practice relevant to the service and client group.
Advanced knowledge of assessment tools, therapy approaches and outcome measures relevant to the client group and service.
Ability to work independently, prioritising own clinical caseload with managerial and leadership role.
Ability to assume leadership roles within SLT service and MDT.
Ability to coordinate workflows, reviewing service demand and capacity and ensuring adequate staffing.
Ability to supervise work performance of staff.
