Medical Laboratory Assistant (Biobanking)

We are seeking a highly motivated Medical Laboratory Assistant to help support the diagnostic work of the department.
Candidates are expected to have previous experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant or to have worked in a diagnostic laboratory. A keen eye for detail and the ability to work in an organised manner are crucial to this role, which supports translation research, including the collection of residual specimens.
The department provides an extensive range of investigations to support the specialist patient population of this tertiary referral paediatric hospital, and also provides a specialist service to other hospitals. This is an excellent opportunity to work as part of a very experienced and dedicated team to gain extra skills and knowledge of paediatric microbiology.

Main duties... of the job
• Perform work strictly according to current Standard Operating Procedures to facilitate the provision of accurate and timely reports.
• Ensure all samples are prepared for analysis and stored according to strict quality standards, as defined in departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
• Ensure that appropriate preventative maintenance has been carried out and recorded on basic laboratory instruments and equipment.
• Regularly monitor and maintain laboratory equipment including pre-analytical equipment, centrifuges, fridges, media, disinfectant, and reagent preparation.
• Sort, log, and dispatch samples to other hospitals, inside and outside the Trust.
• Report to the Senior Biomedical Scientist if work/systems fail to meet the specified standards and/or Turnaround Times.
• Assist in the production, review, and amendment of Standard Operating Procedures.
• Liaise with the Senior Biomedical Scientist and Quality Manager to undertake audits and corrective action as required.
• Have a good understanding of the potential risks when handling infectious samples.
• Safely handle blood, urine, faeces, organs, other body tissue, and hazardous materials according to departmental and Trust protocol.About us

Person Specification Experience/Knowledge
• Previous laboratory experience.
• Use of computers including Word and Excel.
• Some scientific knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and equipment.
• Health and Safety legislation.
• Data protection act.
• Previous experience of working in the NHS.
• Previous laboratory work in a CPA/ISO or other accredited laboratory.
• Use of laboratory information management systems.

Salary: £29,485 to £31,088 per annum inclusive.
