Summary of Duties:
Reports to the Environmental Services Engineer, working under the direction of the Chemist. Collects samples and performs routine analyses at various locations from industries, sewage works and surface and ground waters, applying appropriate sampling and testing protocols. Communicates with industry and members of the public regarding sampling and test results. Notifies supervisors of issues observed in the field requiring escalation and action.
Work Performed:
• Collect samples from treatment plants, sewers, industries, landfills, receiving bodies of water and ground water wells using sampling techniques that are appropriate to the field and environment.
• Collect legal samples following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
• Conduct field analyses, using automated samplers and... data loggers in accordance with established procedures.
• Perform trouble-shooting and routine maintenance of equipment.
• Keep accurate records of activities and results and enter data into the Laboratory Information Management system.
• Make initial contact with industries regarding violations of the Waste Discharge By-law based on field analysis data and observations.
• Report and escalate issues as observed or identified in the field to supervisor or manager.
• Prepare reports and sketches related to sampling sites and locations.
• Perform analyses in the laboratory, in keeping with ISO 17025.
• Assume work of the Lab Technologist in absences or as required, including sample analyses, troubleshooting equipment, and maintaining all standards as required.
• Participate as a team member on specialized projects.
• Prepare documentation for purchasing field equipment.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Completion of an Advanced Community College Diploma in Environmental Technology or equivalent.
Some shift work is required.
Experience:
One year of previous related experience.
Work involving legal sampling and testing and work in an accredited lab is an asset.
Specialized Training & Licenses:
Skills and abilities in the following areas are necessary:
Valid Driver's Licence - Class G.
Ability to prepare and organize samples, materials and documents according to recognized standards.
Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail, and ability to take initiative.
Ability to calibrate and troubleshoot equipment.
Demonstrated proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and various software.
Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with the public, industry and business owners.
Ability to apply safety standards to all areas of work, including driving, sampling, and testing.
Compensation & Other Information:
$50,148 - $71,049 (Level 10)
This posting is for one (1) permanent, full-time position.
Current hours of Work: Monday - Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Work Arrangement: On-site. Subject to change in accordance with business requirements.
These hours of work are subject to change in accordance with the Collective Agreement and may include evening hours and Saturdays.
