Job Description

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.

Salary: £38,620 

The Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Materials Engineer, you will be part of a supportive and collaborative, multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers, working together to develop materials for fusion energy. You'll support work across UKAEA divisions, providing information to enable key decisions to be made on the direction of UK fusion technology development. A significant aspect of this role will be to undertake detailed literature reviews and technical report writing. You'll also interact with other project members where relevant, perform experimentation and/or modelling, and report and present the results internally, but also through conferences and peer reviewed publications. Supporting project management and funding application activities are part of the role. 

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Deliver high quality, novel research or engineering in the field of nuclear materials through own endeavour and creative input. 
  • Compile and present results within technical reports, at scientific conferences and through publication of high-quality research articles. 
  • Work with external collaborators (including universities, public sector research establishments and industry in fusion and related fields) in order to complement UKAEA's internal capability. 
  • Contribute to the development and positive reinforcement of UKAEA’s knowledge base, design rules and practices in the area of materials & nuclear physics research and development. 
  • Contribute to bids for and delivery of novel projects aligned with internal strategy (e.g. STEP, EUROfusion, EPSRC, PhD, Masters placements, graduates). 
  • Propose, secure funding and contribute to delivery of novel projects aligned with internal strategy (e.g. STEP, EUROfusion PPPT Enabling Research, EPSRC, PhD, Masters placements, graduates). 
  • Share knowledge and provide support to others. 

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

  • Degree in material science, physics, chemistry, engineering or equivalent.
  • Post graduate research in materials science demonstrated either through work experience in the materials field in industry, or a MSc / MEng / PhD degree. 
  • Experience in writing technical reports.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as you will create accurate, technical reports, and present findings to a wide range of people across UKAEA. 
  • Self-motivated and capable of working in a team.
