By 2050, the planet could be using twice as much electricity compared to today. Are you interested in contributing and helping to shape the future of the world’s energy? If so, read on.
Fusion, the process that powers the Sun and Stars, is one of the most promising options for generating the cleaner, carbon-free energy that our world badly needs.
UKAEA leads the way in realizing fusion energy, partnering with industry and research for ground-breaking advancements. Our goal is to bring fusion electricity to the grid, supported by tomorrow's power stations. In pursuit of our mission, UKAEA embraces core values: Innovative, Committed, Trusted, and Collaborative.
As an employee of UKAEA you will benefit from:
Salary: £82,815.
This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.
The Role
LIBRTI (Lithium Breeding Tritium Innovation) is a newly launched, £200m Programme under UKAEA's Fusion Futures, the programme aims to establish a pioneering facility for demonstrating tritium breeding feasibility in fusion powerplants. Focused on a 14 MeV neutron source, the facility will allow iterative installations of breeder mock-up experiments (solid and liquid breeders) at scales facilitating direct visibility to commercialise breeder designs. Despite an ambitious 4-year timeline, the programme anticipates establishing a Culham Campus testbed with feeder experiments extending into the next decade.
Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team to shape the future of fusion energy. As Head of LIBRTI Engineering, you will serve as a senior line and technical manager for all engineering activities, exercising design judgment in selecting experiments alongside LIBRTI’s Director and Head of Science. Responsibilities include final approval and technical oversight of all LIBRTI builds, from conception to decommissioning. The incumbent will be a senior UKAEA representative, a chartered engineer, capable of international collaboration with STEM leaders in the fusion community, and well-versed in fusion device engineering.
