Job Description

The role

We're seeking a talented Senior Legal Counsel with a strong commercial contracts background to join our Legal Team. As Senior Legal Counsel you will be expected to advise and negotiate on contracts with our merchants, suppliers and partners. You will work closely with all areas of the business and take a consultative approach to solving complex legal, regulatory and business issues. The successful candidate will be able to lead across a diverse range of global challenges, demonstrating excellent critical judgment with a hands-on approach.

You will be joining a rapidly growing team in one of Europe's most valuable FinTechs! The Checkout Legal team's mission is to be a legal team that exceeds expectations. We do this by providing trusted advice and balancing risk management by fusing dedication, innovation, collaboration and integrity.

How you’ll make an impact

• Partner with our commercial, product, treasury, and compliance teams, acting as a real-time legal advisor to understand their needs and help find creative solutions to achieve business objectives
• Support relationships with regulators on license-related matters
• Review payments product structures, flows and terms to ensure compliance with legal requirements
• Advise on payments regulatory matters including compliance with payments laws and related regulations across our different jurisdictions
• Advise on broader regulatory requirements applicable to financial institutions, including with respect to group regulatory change projects
• Advise the business on market expansion, researching and evaluating new territories and applying for new licenses or expanding scope of existing licenses
• Advise key business functions on new regulatory developments impacting our operations, products and contractual commitments

Qualifications

About you:

• You are a qualified solicitor/lawyer (5-8 PQE) with strong post-qualification experience either in-house or in private practice
• Strong understanding of legal principles applicable to payments, including the payments ecosystem and payments regulatory and licensing strategy/execution, and to broader financial institutions
• Previous FinTech, start-up, payments and/or financial institution experience is desirable but not essential
• Excellent time management skills and experience managing a diverse workload and competing stakeholder demands
• Ability to handle and deliver on numerous high-priority projects concurrently
• Comfort with ambiguity, constant change, and a fast-paced culture
• A practical, solutions-oriented focus to solving legal challenges
• Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as needed, flexing the approach as the matter requires
• Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate and explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely
