Job Description

At Genomics England we are delivering ambitious projects shaping the future of healthcare and science, as well as ensuring we provide secure access to health data for cutting edge genomic research. We are looking for a dedicated Scientific Manager to join our dynamic team, working directly under the Research Management Lead. You will work with world leading key opinion leaders in cancer, rare disease and associated functional researchers, who make up the new Genomics England Research Network. The Research Network is the international network of academic and clinical researchers working on the data in the National Genomic Research Library (NGRL), collected from the 100,000 Genomes Project, the NHS Genomic Medicine Service and beyond.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with the world’s finest scientific minds to accelerate scientific endeavour across the spectrum of foundational science to translational research, by progressing Research Network members’ research and identifying new scientific research and collaboration opportunities – all for the benefit of patients. Stewarding the communities within our Research Network will demand a proactive approach to foster collaboration and guide research directions, ensuring their groundbreaking work not only advances but is integrated with our key initiatives. You will play a central role in driving discovery research across Genomics England, supporting our new ventures into newborn whole-genome screening and population-based cohorts.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Driving engagement with the Research Network and acting as the primary liaison for academic and clinical researchers, facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing to maximise the scientific output and impact of our research communities.
• Helping researchers maximise their scientific output, quality and value that they derive from the data in the National Genomic Research Library, and use knowledge of the field to provide strategic direction, and contribute subject matter expertise to shape and advance key research initiatives, ensuring they align with the network's goals and the broader scientific community's needs.
• Driving discovery research and the strategic integration of Genomics England's research programs with the Research Network, particularly focusing on the Generation Study.  
• Overseeing membership management systems and ensure research policies and governance are followed and maintained
• Helping to forge and manage scientifically driven academia-industry collaborations

We anticipate that the ideal candidate will have:

• Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, capable of working effectively across diverse teams and with external stakeholders.
• Experience developing and managing effective relationships with and within scientific teams, communities or networks, with a keen understanding of research collaboration tools and platforms.
• Proven track record of contributing to large-scale research projects, with specific expertise in screening, predisposition and population-based cohort programmes being a significant plus.
• Be highly motivated, with the ability to work with multiple research projects or groups, manage workloads, perform self-directed working and meet deadlines.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to see the bigger picture and manage expectations and competing demands in a complex, fast-paced environment.
• Ideally, a working knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics or another Customer Relationship Management software and an understanding of enabling research through data and data access processes.

Qualifications

A degree in genomics, bioinformatics, or a related life sciences field, with experience of a post-graduate genomic research environment

Genomics England operates a blended working model as we know our people appreciate the flexibility. We expect most people to come into the office 2 times each month as a minimum. However, this will vary according to role and will be agreed with your team leader. There is no expectation that staff will return to the office full time unless they want to, however, some of our roles require you to be on site full time e.g., lab teams, reception team. 

Our teams and squads have, and will continue to, reflect on what works best for them to work together successfully and have the freedom to design working patterns to suit, beyond the minimum. Our office locations are Canary Wharf, Cambridge and Leeds.
